Shum Hok Kiu

Hok Kiu Shum Cindy is a Hong Kong and Vancouver-based artist who primarily focuses on painting and sculptures. Her art explores uncertainty and the connection between individuals and their environment. By simplifying scenes and objects from photographs into abstract shapes and forms, she transforms locations into quiet spaces.Shum sees art-making as a form of life documentation and emotional expression while she focuses on exploring the inner self and the effects of uncertainty.
Most of her paintings incorporate elements of night scenery as she was especially drawn to the contrast and relationship between darkness and light. Photos taken at night become the foundation of her paintings, transforming real scenarios into a quiet and peaceful space from reality.
