Gordon Hopkins

Landscape painter with a unique texture and depth, inspired by a creative upbringing in a family of artists.

Gordon Hopkins was born in Boston (USA) in 1965 in a family of artists. His father, Edward Hopkins, painter and sculptor, is originally from Massachusetts (USA) and his mother, Julie Hopkins, a painter, was born in England. Gordon Hopkins studied Art and History of Art at Principia College (Illinois, USA).

Gordon Hopkins and his twin brother Mark grew up in a creative environment and the work of their parents offered them an early artistic education. The paintings, the relationship with the forms, initiation to colors along with the positive energy had a big role to play in their open-mindedness, curiosity and discovery. His work finds its strength in his unique technique and use of strong color.

While studying at the Principia College, he simultaneously collaborated with Shep Butler (Vermont) a landscape architect for designing gardens. This way, before becoming a painter, he first learned the profession of a landscape architect, and this makes him a landscape painter today.

He has the gift to design his paintings, just likes the gardens he designed. His technique (superimposition of dry oil paint with a stick) gives a peculiar texture and a unique depth to his canvases. His painting is dynamic and filled with joy. His creativity is based on a permanent observation of the environment. Patterns, forms, fish, gardens to landscapes are some of the many subjects in his work. Gordon's work brings with it, a sense of exploration, an interpretation of our surroundings from his point of view, filled with color and a sense of joy. “It is often just the simple form that can have a great impact and become very important in my work.”

Currently living and working in Brussels, Belgium and through his travels throughout Europe, he gathers new ideas and images for his paintings. Gordon Hopkins's work has been displayed during several collective and personal international exhibitions (USA, UK, France, Belgium, Mexico), like the Art Zurich International fair in Switzerland in 2010, Miami Contemporary Art Fair, or the Affordable Art fair in Amsterdam in 2010.
” His representation emphasizes the beauty and perhaps overlooked context of our natural surroundings."
